Phil Cook the owner of Liquid Metal Guitars is making some pretty unique instruments up there in Vancouver B.C. His guitars are made from one piece of 6061, T6 aircraft aluminum. After the basic shape is cut with a CNC machine, two highly skilled craftsmen work the body and buff it….this is a 6 hour process!
Phil was inspired by his passion for guitars and from TV shows like American Chopper, Biker Build Off or OverHaulin’. He thought it would be really cool to do metal work like on those shows with a guitar. When he started to share his idea with some people the ractions were not exactly what he expected. He was met with a lot of doubts about the sound, pickups and chroming something that large.
He proved them all wrong and found the right combination of thickness and weight and the end result was shocking because of the incredible sustain from the aluminum alloy. Phil feels that it is way better than wood and as a bonus found that metal actually shielded the electronics. Much experimenting was done with pickups to match up with an aluminum body guitar.
I for one find these guitars fascinating especially because the LMG-T resembles a Tele and you all know how I feel about them..!!! I think if you are reading this post you should check out Phil’s Liquid Metal Guitars. There is a ton of info on his site and some great demo videos. Guitars made from aluminum..??? I’d give one a whirl…!!!!
