I don’t know if any of you know about Rodrigo y Gabriela but their story is very inspiring to me. Rodrigo and Gabriela started out in a heavy metal band in Mexico. Their goal in life was to be full time musicians but they did not get accepted to the conservatory in Mexico City and their band wasn’t doing very well.
They both decided to sell all their gear and just keep a couple of acoustic guitars and move to Dublin, Ireland. After getting aquainted with their new surroundings they began to play as a duo in bars and busking in the streets playing Metallica songs. It wasn’t long before they became bored with this and began composing their own tunes.
Needing to make money to survive they would test a new song and rewrite it until it was bringing in the most money it could right there on the streets. After doing this for a while they saved some money and started moving to other cities gaining a bigger following along the way.
In 2006 they released their first album entitled “Rodrigo y Gabriela” which totally rocked the Irish charts and it was the first instrumental band to ever do that. Plus what’s more amazing is that it was just the two of them with guitars with next to zero start up capital. All they had were two guitars, passion and each other. Just recently they performed in Paris with Al DiMeola and in Chicago with Robert Trujillo of Metallica.They were also featured on Late Show with Dave Letterman and the Craig Ferguson Show. It just goes to show where passion and determination will take you in this world. Awesome!!
