Here’s a great new CD by Tomo Fujita called “Pure”. Tomo is an amazing player and faculty member at the Berklee College of Music. He has worked with some great artists such as Phil Collins, John Mayer and Ronnie Earl to name a few.
On his latest release Tomo enlisted Will Lee to play bass and actually used three different drummers. Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie and Steve Jordan played on three tracks each for a total of 9 “pure” tracks….(pun intended).
Tomo’s style is very jazz/blues and funky. His playing is very expressive, dynamic and rich with interesting melodic improvisation. I find myself listening to it over and over picking up on little nuance parts that Tomo played and recognizing the brilliant work by the rhythm section. Just as the title implies Tomo’s tone is pure as well playing a Stratocaster and 335 through vintage blackface Fender Pro Reverb amps.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Tomo at the 2010 NAMM show at the Eminence display. He played all the demo tracks for the Eminence Patriot and Red Coat line of speakers. Tomo is a super nice guy and very passionate about his playing. This is a great CD that’s easy to listen to and enjoy….it’s purely awesome..!!
