Listen up everybody…..here is a really cool guitar CD you should all check out. It’s called “Swinging Guitar Sounds of Young America” by a great guitar player named Vinnie Zummo. If you don’t know who Vinnie is you would know him by all the artists he has worked with including Art Garfunkel, Shawn Colvin, Roger Daltrey, Joe Jackson and many others. Vinnie actually played with Joe Jackson on the “Tucker” movie soundtrack (which is one of my personal favorites) and I always wondered for years who the guitar player was……now I know!
“Swinging Guitar Sounds of Young America” is an eclectic melding of many different musical styles. One minute you think you are listening to a lost Beatles track the next you hear some ferocious country Tele pickin’ only to be surprised by an Earth Wind & Fire jam. This may sound like the album is all over the place…….well……it is but somehow it all goes together which is amazing. There are 20 tracks on “Swinging Guitars Sounds of Young America”. Some of my personal favorites are Waffles (cool jazz), Pancakes (western swing), Fab Gear (Beatle sounds), Wilson Beach (Four Freshman/Beach Boys sounds) and Kool Bop (be-bop type jazz). So many really cool and authentically executed styles…..Vinnie is amazing!!!
Vinnie pays homage to many guitarists and artists including the Beach Boys, Elvin Jones, Earth Wind & Fire, Jeff Beck, John Scoefield, Ringo Starr, Pat Martino, Bob Wills, Charlie Christian and I hear a bit of B.B. King….. Vinnie is a monster player and can shift gears on a dime. You would be hard pressed to find a player that could keep up!!! My head is still spinning…..in a good way!
